Rex Miller

Rex, through his representational paintings in oil seeks to convey his passion for the Chesapeake Bay Country, its challenging waters, remote island villages, fascinating colonial towns and colorful rural farms. In the past ten years he has become a recognized Southern Maryland artist, noted for colorful landscapes and marine scenes, winning awards in Calvert County. Rex started painting in the 1960’s, primarily as a part time hobby while pursuing his interest in Chesapeake Bay and offshore sailing. Many of his paintings emphasize visual openness and skies that reflect impressions from over 30 years of sailing and other outdoor activities. Following his retirement, Rex has focused his new freedom on painting.

He studied painting at the McLean School of Art under John Bryants and several art instructors at the Alexandria Art League. He has also studied under nationally recognized artist Ross Merrill and professional artist Elizabeth Bygler. He is influenced by 19th century artists Turner and Constable; and by contemporary artists John Stobart and Margaret Kessler. Rex has been an active member in the Calvert Artist’s Guild and North End Gallery since 1999; and is a founding member of the Color and Light Society and the CalvART Gallery in 2005.

His paintings have been exhibited in numerous juried shows in Southern Maryland and Annapolis and can be found in private collections in Maryland, Virginia the District of Columbia and Scotland. Currently, his work is exhibited in North End Gallery in Leonardtown, CalvART Gallery in Prince Frederick and Creek Side Gallery in Leonardtown, MD, and other local venues. His work can be viewed at his studio in Solomons by appointment (410-326-2604).
